You could try red oak though, that's what i'm using. you can get it at home depot. and for tutorials, go to www.geocities.com/salampsio. it helped me a lot during the process of building my bow. I've since moved on to trying to find staves from "fresh" sources instead of the treated dried wood from Home Depot.
